Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has a number of outlets across the island, especially around the tourist areas.
They have very helpful staff that can assist you in many ways: To begin with, they can give you (free of charge) good maps, plenty of brochures and leaflets with details of events that are being held in the city, and more... Otherwise, they can also help you with services like booking of hotel rooms, tickets for events and shows, organized tours, etc...
If you wish to get a good city map, as well as some brochures, before departure, you'll better write to STB and ask them to send you an Information package which you are likely to get, by post, within a week or two...
You can send your request through their official website (through this link):

Alternatively, you can send a letter, Fax or Email to any of their offices around the world:

If you did not ask STB to send you the information package by post, their bureau at Changi International airport is, probably, the first place you should visit, as soon as you arrive... at least to pick a good map of the city.
There are four STB posts at the airport, two of them are located at the Arrival halls (Arrival hall terminals 1 & 2) and the other two are at the transit passenger halls. They are all open daily, from 6 am to 2 am
Other STB outlets can be found at the following locations :
Orchard Rd. - Corner of Orchard Rd. and Crainhill Rd. (opposite Orchard Shopping Centre, 2 minutes walk from MRT-Somerset). Open daily, from 9:30 am to 10:30 pm
Liang Court Shopping Mall - 177 River Valley Rd. (next to Clarke Quay). Open daily from 10 am to 10 pm.
Harbor Front - Arrival Hall, Singapore Cruise Centre (next to MRT-Harbor front). Open daily, from 9 am to 8:30 pm.
Little India - 73 Dunlop Street (The InnCrowd Backpackers' hostel, not far from MRT-Little India). Open daily, 10 am to 10 pm
Suntec City Mall - The Galleria@Suntec City Mall (not far from MRT-City Hall) Open daily, from 10 am to 6 pm.
In addition to the actual bureaus, STB operates the Touristline which you can call 24 hours a day, free of charge, and get information.
