Asian Market Café

This splendid restaurant is one of the best city-centre options for those of you who love authentic Peranakan cuisine or for those who want to discover it and to have a taste of everything...

Located at the glitzy Fairmont, it boasts a fairly spacious and airy dinning area, pleasantly designed with rattan furniture and vintage murals on the walls... Ambience is quite pleasant and not too formal or fussy.

To get great results, almost everything is made in-house, using fresh ingredients, so the food at the buffet is really fabulous.  Alongside the lovely Peranakan food, there is a good selection of Malay, Indian, Chinese and contemporary regional delicacies which reflect the broad diversity of flavours and cultures of Southeast Asia.

Among the delicacies you are likely to find here, there are good-old favorites like Laksa (rich, spicy noodle soup with different ingredients), Babi pongteh (a stew of pork trotters in rich brown sauce), Ayam buah keluak (a traditional and well-known dish of chicken and Buah Keluak - unique nuts, from a mangrove tree that grows in Malaysia and Indonesia), Char kway teow (a popular Southeast Asian dish, consisting of flat rice noodles which are fried over very high heat with light and dark soy sauce, chilli, prawns, cockles, egg, bean sprouts and Chinese chives.  Sometimes slices of Chinese sausage and fish cake are also added. It is fried in pork fat, with crisp croutons of pork lard, which give it its characteristic taste), Lor Mee (Thick flat yellow noodles, made with rich gravy and meat or fish), Mee Siam ("Siamese noodles" in spicy, sweet and sour light gravy) and Mee Rebus (a dish of thin yeloow noodles with rich gravy and seafood).

Prices are quite reasonable for this kind of buffet: round SG$ 40 for an adult and SG$ 20 for a child.

Buffet-lunch is served from 12 noon - 2.30pm,  High Tea buffet is served on weekends and public holidays, from 12 noon - 4.30pm, and Dinner buffet is served from 6 - 10pm
