Makarios is the sister outlet of the excellent Cafe Le Troquet.
It is probably not the kind of place you would go to specially, but if you happen to be around the area of Raffles hotel or Bugis and you want to have a lovely European meal at a good price and in a nice environment, that is one of your best choices.
Located at the 3rd floor of the National Library, the café occupies a spacious, airy lobby-like area, with floor-to-ceiling windows that render some views. Modern and pleasant décor, together with quiet and pleasant ambience makes it a very enjoyable place for a relaxing lunch or early dinner.
The kitchen produces some lovely French and Europeans favorites... not "insanely sophisticated"... just delicious fare you can't go wrong with: Escargots, Chaucuterie platter (a mixture of French 'cold cuts'), Salad Niçoise, Chicken Basquaise, Chicken in white truffle oil & cream sauce, Beef Bourguignon, Duck leg confit, Panfried steak Entrecote with blue-cheese sauce and more...
The desserts here are also fairly promising... Crème Brulee, Profiteroles, Dame blanche (hot chocolate sauce on vanilla ice-cream), as well as Tiramisu, Brownies and the likes...
Prices are not bad at all: a full, a-la-carte meal will probably be around SG$ 30 - 40, while set-lunch is around SG$ 15
