Emergency, Dangers and Warnings

Macau is considered as a fairly safe city, both day and night, and there is no area of town that has a reputation of being too dangerous... However, as in every big city around the world, there are incidents of theft, burglary and swindle.

There are, therefore, a few basic rules that should be followed:

  • Keep your personal documents and valuables in a safe place (your hotel's safe should be fine)
  • Pay attention to your belongings, especially when you visit crowded areas and markets.
  • Pickpockets do sometimes operate in markets and other crowded areas.  If somebody approaches you and tries to divert your attention, just tell him off politely...
  • Avoid people who approach you in the street with all sort of "dubious proposals" for quick profits... (that, of course, does not include legitimate salespeople who try to promote their business)
