Those of you who have more than a few days to spend in Macau can consider staying a night or two in one of Coloane Island's youth hostels, which offer a fantastic location, right next to the island's picturesque beaches.
The hostels' main advantage is also their major disadvantage – Location ! Coloane Island is relatively far from town and being official YHA establishments, these hostels have curfew at night and accept only YHA card-holders… Moreover, during summer demand is higher than supply and it can really be hard to find a vacant bed.
As you might expect, maintenance and cleanliness in the youth hostels are better than in most of the cheap guesthouses in town and facilities include air-condition, properly equipped kitchen, clean showers, BBQ area and a nice "communal area" with TV, movies and activities…
Rates, at the time of writing, are quite reasonable (roughly MOP 100 per bed per night), but you have to book well in advance through their website
