Introduction to Macau Shopping

Macau is a free port with no taxes or duties, so prices here are considerably lower than in America, Europe and Japan. Moreover, in more than a few occasions, Macau's prices will also be lower than those of many of Asia's cities.

Shopping is a very popular pastime in Macau and locals, as well as visitors, flock in droves to the glittering shopping arcades and the city streets where hundreds of shops and boutiques cater to every taste.  Exotic open-air markets are housing small traditional shops that sell everything... from Portuguese antiques to Chinese furniture and herbal medicines...

Opening Hours

Quite a few shops in Macau are open daily, all year round (except on the Chinese New Year holiday when many businesses close down) and many of them stay open until fairly late.

Quality and Price

Macau shops offer a wide variety of qualities, from cheap Chinese imitations to top international brand names.

The Macau Consumers council maintains a "quality services scheme" and issues the "Certified Shop" emblem to those shops and businesses who have never had complaints filed against them.

The scheme is aimed at helping visitors find shops and businesses they can trust. But, there is one thing you should remember:  the fact that a certain shop displays the "Certified Shop" sign doesn't necessarily mean that you have to buy there with your eyes closed... Check, compare and then buy.  On the other hand, shops that do not have the "Certified Shop" sign are not necessarily owned by conmen...
