Rising to a height of 20 meters, right next to Macau's waterfront, this beautiful bronze statue combines western and Chinese styles, and has long become one of Macau's most recognized attractions.
As its name denotes, the statue is dedicated to Kun Iam, the goddess of mercy in Chinese Buddhism, and at its foot there is a lotus-shaped dome that houses the Kun Iam Ecumenical Centre, where you can visit a small exhibition and get some educational literature about Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.
The tiny manmade island on which the statue stands is connected to the waterfront by a 60 mtrs. long causeway, and the centre is open daily (except Friday), 10 am - 6 pm. Entrance is free.
Across the street from Kun Iam Statue, on the section of Avenida Dr. Sun Yat Sen between the corner of Alameda Dr. Carlos de Assumpção and the corner of Avenida Sir Anders Ljungstedt, there is a lively dining and nightlife area called the Docas (Docks).
.
This area, which is also known as Macau LKF (after Hong Kong's famous nightlife district), boasts a nice choice of restaurants, cafés and bars, and although it is primarily a nightlife district, more than a few of the venues are open during the day...
Recommended places around "the Docas" include Antica Trattoria (serving excellent Italian cuisine in a lovely environment), Ping's Shark's Fin (superb shark's fin specialties), Dom Galo (a popular restaurant, specializing in Macanese-Portuguese food), Carlos (Owned by a family of cooks, this restaurant serves splendid Macanese-Portuguese food in a nice, yet unpretentious environment), La Comedie Chez Vous (This Cute, French bistro serves both classic French cuisine and casual Café stuff in a lovely environment) and Bex Café (located at the Macau cultural centre, just a minute away).
