Rua da Felicidade

Rua da Felicidade ("Happiness Street")

Memories of a happy and promiscuous past...

Rua da Felicidade ("Happiness Street"), between Largo de Santo Agostinho and Largo do Senado, was once the heart of Macau's red lights district, and that is how it got its rather peculiar name...  Today, it is a cute, authentic shopping street where you can buy some "exotic" products, enjoy some truly authentic food and see some nice shophouses with traditional red louvers... (Movie lovers may recognize the street from "Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Doom").

Walk along Rua da Felicidade and visit the small streets that branch off it.  At the end of the street, near hotel Ko wah, you can turn right and walk along Travessa do Mastro or Travessa do Matadouro to Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro.

.

On the other side of Avenida Ribeiro, the Cultural Club and museum is housed in Tak Seng On, a beautiful old building with mixed Chinese and western motifs that used to accommodate a prosperous pawnshop. Tthe cultural club gives the visitor an opportunity to see lots of lovely art pieces, related to Macau's culture and heritage. There is also an excellent gallery and arts shop here.

.

Recommended restaurants along Rua da Felicidade include Tou Tou Koi (specializes in Chinese hotpot/steamboat dishes and old style cooking...), Fat Siu Lau (One of Macau's oldest restaurants, serving authentic Macanese cuisine), Café Kam Ma Lon (an unpretentious eatery, serving decent food at moderate prices), Sai Nam (Cantonese style seafood), Restaurant Cheong Kei noodle (lovely Cantonese specialties with a traditional "Macanese touch"...)

Rua da Felicidade is just a few minutes walk from Senado Square. Look at our Bus Guide to see how to get to Senado Square.
