Mt. Davis Youth Hostel is the only YHA establishment to appear on our recommended list, and ironically enough, its main advantage is also its main disadvantage – Location !
The hostel is perched atop one of the hills on Hong Kong Island, surrounded by rolling lawns and lush foliage and enjoys fabulous panoramic views of the city and Victoria Harbour… The problem starts the moment you want to pop to town, as the journey to any of Hong Kong's shopping/entertainment districts can be quite long, even if you take the hostel's free shuttle to the Ferry Terminal (it runs only a few times a day)… The nearest bus stop is on Victoria Road, from where you will have to huff and puff for 30 minutes, up Mount Davis path (or simply take a cab…)
Most of the beds here are located within the large dormitory halls (forget about those intimate 6 bed dormitories you find in private hostels), but there are also a few double and triple rooms and, generally speaking, the place is clean, properly maintained and pleasant…
Just like in many YHA hostels, there are communal activities which make it possible for guests to get to know each other, but being a YHA establishment has its downsides too, such as the midnight curfew which restricts you from party the whole night long.
Facilities also include a well equipped kitchen where you can cook your meals, coin operated laundry machines and a picnic area.
Non member rates, at the time of writing, are somewhere around HK$ 140 per night for a bunk bed (dormitory) and HK$ 360 for a double room.
Address: 123, Mount Davis Path
