Hong Kong's medical facilities are modern and well advanced and there is no problem to receive any kind of treatment. The standards are as high as in most western countries.
It is very recommended to obtain a comprehensive health-insurance before arrival, as medical costs are quite expensive. Visitors are required to pay $570 if they use the Accident and Emergency services in Hong Kong public hospitals. The Hong Kong Government assures visitors they will receive the emergency care they require. People who cannot pay immediately will be billed later.
The following hospitals seem to have a good reputation :
- Adventist Health, 40 Stubbs Road, Hong Kong Island, Phone: 3651-8888
- Queen Mary Hospital, Pokfulam Road, Phone: 28553838 / 28553111
- Canossa Hospital, No. 1 Old Peak Road , Hong Kong Island, 25221194 / 25221195
- Queen Elizabeth Hospital, 30 Gascoigne Road, Kowloon, 2958 8888
Generally speaking, Hong Kong is a clean city that maintains high standards of hygiene. That normally includes food centers and markets, where authentic food is prepared in cheap eateries. Most of these eateries and stalls are visited frequently by health-inspectors. However, it is always good to take precautions, especially if you want to eat seafood... just make sure that the place is reasonably clean before placing your order.
Tap water in Hong Kong isn't really the best... It is safe to drink but the taste is not something to write home about... The pipeline is old in some parts of the city and the rust affects the water. Bottled water is not expensive and can be bought everywhere.
Vaccination certificates are not required usually. You might need to have a Yellow Fever vaccine if coming from a contaminated area (mostly from Africa and Latin America). Check with your carriers before departure.
