Cheap hotels, Hostels and Guest houses

A few words about Hong Kong's cheap hotels & hostels...

This section covers mostly hostels, cheap hotels, guest-houses and other backpacker places.

Those places were recommended by many travelers.  They are relatively clean and tidy and provide their customers some amenities like hot/cold showers, luggage storage, nice rooms/dormitories with reasonable furniture, etc...

Some of the hotels in this section would also have nice double-rooms at a reasonable price.

The price range is around HK$ 80 to 120 per person per night (Dormitory/shared room), while price range for a double room in this category is around HK$ 400 to 500 per room per night.

Because Hong Kong is a rather congested metropolis, where every square meter is worth a fortune, accommodation tends to be on the small side and prices... on the high side.

Quite a few cheap backpacker places can be found in two large buildings, located close to each other on Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon.

The two buildings are: Chungking Mansions on 36-44 Nathan Road and Mirador Mansion on 54-64 Nathan Road.

Those two massive, old and rather ugly buildings were built in the early 1960s to provide cheap housing to the city's growing population.  Today, however, most of the apartments are converted to cheap hotels and guesthouses, alongside curry restaurants, African eateries, clothing shops, sari stores and foreign exchange offices. The buildings often act as a large gathering place for some of the ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.

Most of the guesthouses offer small, congested rooms that are not "something to write home about..."  Even though, some are clean and reasonably comfortable (see recommendations below).  The prices, however, are very low and for the non-discerning backpacker, this can be a good solution...

Two important accommodation-tips from 'Metropolasia-Man':

1) Many hostels and guesthouses around Tsim sha Tsui are touted quite vigorously.  Touts who work for these places will tell you whatever you want to hear, and will also try to convince you they actually work for the very hostel you are looking for...

Naturally, a worthy establishment doesn't need to be touted... So think twice before you follow these fellows and make sure the name and the address of the place you arrived at are identical to the one you wanted to go to (including floor number and so on)... There's absolutely no reason for you to be disappointed.
