Riding this world famous tram is one of Hong Kong's "must dos"
Riding up to "Victoria Peak" with the world famous historic tram has long become one of Hong Kong's "must dos".
.
The bright red tram has been running up and down the steep slope of Mount Victoria since 1888 and is used by almost everybody who wants to get to "The Peak" (although riding the bus can also be a spectacular experience...)
.
The tram departs from "the lower terminus" in Central, next to Bank of China Tower and Hong Kong Park and climbs the stiff gradient in approximately 7 minutes, covering a distance of about 1.4 kilometers and a height difference of almost 400 meters, before reaching its upper terminus at "Victoria Gap": A small ravine 150 meters lower than the actual top of Mount Victoria.
.
Here, there are two shopping and entertainment complexes, namely Peak Tower (where the tram's upper terminus is located) and Peak Galleria. Other than the much expected restaurants, souvenir shops and tourist traps, the Peak Tower also houses two "real" attractions: The Sky Terrace, from where you can catch some of the most fantastic views over the metropolis, and the Hong Kong branch of Madame Tussauds.
.
The Peak Tram departs every 10 - 15 minutes, every day, from 7 am to 12 midnight.
.
You can buy your ticket at either of the terminuses. They cost HK$ 25 / HK$ 36 (one way/ return) for an adult, and HK$ 9 / 16 (one way / return) for a child of 3 - 11 years or for a senior citizen (above 65). There are also "Combo" tickets for the tram and the Sky Terrace at a somewhat discounted rate.

Before rushing to the tram...
While waiting for your tram, at the lower terminus, spend a couple of minutes at the Peak Tram Historical Gallery, where some memorabilia items from the tram's early days are displayed.
|
To get to the Peak Tram Lower Terminus: From MTR - Central, take exit J-2 to Chatter Garden, walk through the garden, cross Queen's Road Central and continue up along Garden Road (you will see it on your left side, opposite the American Consulate General).
.
If coming by ferry from Tsim sha Tsui, you can board the Peak Tram shuttle bus (No. 15C) at Central's Ferry-pier bus terminus (next to the pier). It operates daily, from 10 am to almost midnight (a bus leaves every 15 - 20 minutes) and the ride costs approximately HK$ 4 per person (or you can just walk for 10 - 15 minutes).
