The heart of colonial Hong Kong
|
Statue Square is one of the most central points in "Central", and a good spot to start discovering the area. Built in the late 19th century, the square used to host the statues of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, Edward VII and Sir Thomas Jackson Bart, the charismatic chief manager of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), who helped significantly in financing development project during Hong Kong's early years.
The statues were removed during World War II by occupying Japanese forces, who sent them to Japan, but were brought back as soon as the war was over, and while Queen Victoria's statue had been re-erected in Causeway Bay's Victoria Park, Sir Thomas Jackson still stands proudly in front of HSBC's Main Building.

Over the weekends, the square becomes a popular gathering place for hundreds of Filipino domestic workers.
