The Golden Bauhinia Square, right behind Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, is where the historic handover ceremony was held, on 1 July 1997, officially marking the end of 150 years of British rule on this corner of the world and the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China.
A large statue of a golden Bauhinia blakeana (Hong Kong's "national flower") stands right at the centre of the square and a flag-raising ceremony is held daily, at 8am.
