The Former Supreme Court Building

One of the finest buildings of colonial-times Hong Kong

The Former Supreme Court Building (Currently the Legislative Council Building borders the east side of Statue Square and is one of the finest colonial era buildings in Hong Kong.

Inaugurated in 1912, the neo-classical granite structure was designed by British architect Sir Aston Webb, who, among other things, also designed the eastern facade of Buckingham Palace and the Cromwell Road frontage of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Built on reclaimed land, the two-storey building features some typical classical motifs, like colonnades of Ionic columns and a Greek-style pediment, on which you can see the blindfolded statue of Themis, the Greek goddess of Justice, holding her scales.

In 1985 the Supreme Court has moved to its new location and the building has become the home of Hong Kong's Legislative Council.
