Introduction to Hong Kong's culinary world

Being an international crossroad, where East meets West, Hong Kong developed a rich and diverse culinary culture that combines different cuisines from all over the world.

Considered by many as a "Gourmet Paradise", the metropolis is home to more than ten thousand restaurants offering a plethora of styles, tastes and aromas... From simple eateries that cook fabulous traditional dishes to world class establishments that host the jet set...  Hong Kong cuisine provides an unlimited variety in every class.

The cuisines of China (and the Cantonese in particular) are dominating Hong Kong's culinary scene and that is no surprise, as most of the territory's residents are of Cantonese origin.  Other Far Eastern cuisines, such as Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese and Indian are also represented in restaurants throughout Hong Kong and, quite naturally, European and British influence can also be found, as Hong Kong was a British colony for more than 150 years.

Other than Chinese and Asian cuisines, there are hundreds of restaurants in Hong Kong that specialize in a variety of international styles: From Turkish and Middle Eastern to fine Italian and French bistros, Brazilian grills and American steak houses... As a matter of fact, it is hard to find a notable cuisine that is not represented in the territory.

Details of recommended restaurants and eateries can be found in our Hong Kong Restaurant and Nightlife Guide.
