MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) - Subway

The MRT (Mass Rapid Transit ) is Singapore's fastest and most comfortable means of transport and covers many of the city-state's attractions. It is inexpensive, with single journey fares ranging from as low as SG$ 0.90 for a short trip to as high as SG$ 2 for a long trip (as mentioned already, using the EZ-Link card will give you a certain discount).  Each of the stations has few entries that provide convenient links to nearby streets and public buildings.

The MRT operates on four lines across Singapore, apart from the LRT lines :

  1. The East-West line (indicated with the colour Green on the MRT map): runs along Singapore Island's south shore, from Boon Lay in the West to Pasir Ris in the East. An offshoot branches at Tanah Merah station and provides connection to Singapore Changi Airport.  The East-West line passes through many of Singapore's well known commercial, entertainment and tourism centers.  Connections to the North-South line are available through City Hall, Raffles Place and Jurong East MRT stations.  Connection to the Northeast line is available through Outram Park station.
  2. North-South line (indicated with the colour Red on the MRT map) : covers Singapore Island's central and north parts.  The line starts at MRT Marina Bay (south of the city center), goes through Orchard Road and Toa Payoh to Yi Shun and Woodlands, on the Island's north shore, and continues southwards to Jurong East, where it meets the East-West line.  Connections to the East-West line are available through City Hall, Raffles Place and Jurong East MRT stations.  Connection to the northeast line is available through Dhoby Ghaut station and connection to the Light Rail Transit (LRT) is available through Choa Chu Kang station.
  3. Northeast line (indicated with the colour Purple on the MRT map):  runs from HarbourFront MRT station (Sentosa connection) on Singapore's south shore, via Chinatown, City center and Little India, to MRT-Punggol on the Island's northeast corner.  Connection to the East-West line is available through Outram Park station.  Connection to the North-South line is available through Dhoby Ghaut station and connection to the Light Rail Transit (LRT) is available through Sengkang and Punggol stations.
  4. The relatively new Circle Line (inicated with the colour Yellow on the MRT map) runs in circle around the city fringe and crosses the three other lines, passing through many places of interest, like the Singapore Eye, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore Art Museum and Bras Basah Road... In the near future, this line will also provide direct access to attractions like Singapore Botanic Gardens, Labrador Park and

It is important to remember that most MRT lines are not circular and, therefore, in each station there are two platforms for each of the lines, one for each direction.

It is advisable to check (when you enter an MRT station) that you are heading towards the right platform... Changing trains (if needed) is done within the station and there is no need to leave the building.

Most of the MRT trains operate daily, from 6:00 am until around midnight.
