Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR)
The KCR provides commuter train service from Kowloon through the New Territories to the boundary with Mainland China. It has four domestic passenger rail services: East Rail, Ma on Shan Rail, West Rail and Light Rail.
.
The most popular line is the East Rail. It starts at East Tsim sha Tsui Station in Kowloon (not far from Nathan Rd.) and travels northward via Kowloon Tong (MTR connection), the Racecourse and the University. It ends at Lo Wu, the land border with China (near the city of Shenzhen). Trains on this route operate daily, from 5:30 am until 1:00 after midnight. They depart every few minutes and traveling time, from the first station to the last one, is about forty minutes.
Ma on Shan Rail is actually an extension of the East Rail. It starts at Tai Wai station in Shatin (along the East Rail) and ends at Wu Kai Sha station. This line connects residential and industrial areas in the New Territories and so, the average visitor is not likely to find much interest in it.
The West Rail starts at Nam Cheong station in Sham Shui Po, West Kowloon and ends at Tuen Mun station in Tuen Mun (Southwest part of the New Territories). There are quite a few tourist attractions along this route (you can read more about them in The Western New Territories section).
The KCR Light Rail serves the northwestern New Territories, within and between Tuen Mun District and Yuen Long District. It mostly commutes passengers from the stations along the west Rail to the residential suburbs. Visitors use it to get to some of the sites around the west side of the New Territories.
KCR also operates long-distance intercity rail transport into Mainland China. More details about it are provided in the Getting to Hong Kong section.
Payment methods in KCR are similar to those of MTR and, as usual, using Octopus card is better and cheaper.
