Travelling to Macau by Sea

Many visitors arrive at Macau by ferry, from Hong Kong.

There are also ferry services that connect Macau with Shenzhen and Guangzhou, as well as with other towns on the Chinese side of the Pearl River Delta (either directly or via the ferry Sky pier at Hong Kong international airport).

.

Ferries run between Hong Kong and Macau 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

They depart from two points in Hong Kong :

Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal on Hong Kong Island (not far from exit D of MTR-Sheung Wan) and HK China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon (adjacent to Harbor City).

In Macau, the ferries arrive and depart from the Macau Ferry Terminal which is centrally located, a stone-throw away from the city's major tourist attractions.

Shuttle bus service connects passengers from the Ferry Terminal to Shenzhen Airport.

For those of you who only want to visit the Cotai Strip and the Venetian, the new CotaiJet service might just be the right thing.  The jet ferry departs from Tsim sha Tsui's HK China Ferry Terminal, in Hong Kong, and travels to Taipa Island's Temporary Ferry Terminal in Macau (from where a free coach takes you to the Cotai Strip).

Ferries depart daily, every thirty minutes (every one hour at night), from 7 am to 1am. Traveling time is one hour and the basic fare is HK$ 134 one way (HK$ 146 on weekends and holidays and HK$ 168 for the night service).  From Macau, ferries leave every thirty minutes (every one hour at night, and every two hours late at night...), from 7:30 am to 5am (which means you can party the night away in the Venetian and make it back to Hong Kong, just in time for breakfast...

The Yuet Tung Shipping Co operates a a ferry service from Macau to Shekou (some 30 minutes drive from downtown Shenzhen).  In Macau, the ferry departs from the Yuet Tung Terminal in the Inner Harbour (at the end of Av. Almeida Ribeiro, Rua das Lorchas, near the Master Hotel, Pier 14) at 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m and 8:15 p.m. Tickets cost MOP$129 for adults and MOP$78 for children. Passengers departing from Shekou (Shenzhen) can travel at 8:15 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 3:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The trip takes about one hour and twenty minutes. Please call (853) 2857 4478 for detail.

Two small tips that can save you time and headaches:

  • You can travel directly to Hong Kong Airport's Sky Pier only if the airline you are travelling with has a counter there.  If not, you will have to enter Hong Kong (including customs and immigration) and travel all the way to the airport... Please check it out with your ferry-operator, so you can spare enough time, in case you have to travel via Hong Kong...
  • Both ferry operators charge separately for luggages (their free allowance is really nothing, probably because most travelers do not come to Macau for more than a day or two).  If you do have luggages, bare in mind you'll need a few minutes to go to the "overweight counter" and send them.  You will also need cash (no credit cards are accepted)
