Occupying a characterful shophouse along historic Joo Chiat road, the good, old Betel Box is one of Singapore's best and most popular backpackers hostels. It has only two "disadvantages" :
- It is quite far from the city center.
- The dormitories are a bit congested...
The guesthouse is located on one of the main streets of Katong / Geylang Serai area, which means that there are plenty of shops around it, as well as restaurants and night-spots... Getting to the city center, on the other hand, will involve a bus ride, but there are quite a few buses that stop next to the hostel (Paya Lebar MRT Station is roughly 15 - 20 minutes walk from the guesthouse).
The guesthouse itself is clean, comfortable and well equipped: There is a large communal area with social games, Foosball, Snooker, Reading corner, unlimited internet, small gym and the likes... The rooms are nice and air-conditioned, with clean showers, towels, bed-sheets, lockers and the usual stuff... The price also includes a nice breakfast.
Tony, the friendly chap who runs the place, organizes guided walks and bike-tours that are very popular among the hostel's guests.
A dormitory bed will go for around SG$ 20 a night (including breakfast).
A double room costs about SG$ 60 per room per night.
