About the outlying islands

Serenity, beautiful nature and easygoing lifestyle

Although the Outlying Islands are "officially" (and historically) part of the New Territories, they are a completely different story and certainly deserve to have a section of their own within this website...

Hong Kong boasts some 262 islands (including Hong Kong Island itself, which is never counted as part of the "outlying islands"), of which only a few are inhabited... The islands stand in complete contrast to the neighboring city and even to some of the scarcely populated areas around the New Territories...

Some of them have a "true island ambience" with fishermen villages, seafood restaurants, waterfront cafés, sandy beaches and lovely nature trails... while others are small and secluded, perfect for those who look for a daylong escape from the city's hustle and bustle...

No matter whether it is beautiful nature you are after, or beaches, or seaside walks... Try not to leave Hong Kong without paying a visit to one or two of the islands.

Maps, literature and Tour operators

Those of you who really want to "explore" the country-parks around the islands (especially around Lantau, where there's plenty of lovely nature to enjoy...) should purchase one of the publications of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department / Friends of the Country Parks in any of the major bookstores (their "Eyes on Nature" series is quite good and includes books that cover most of Hong Kong's country parks).

The Survey and Mapping Office (SMO) of the Land's Department publishes some pretty good Countryside maps, where hiking and country trails are properly marked.

To buy one of their maps, you can call their "enquiry hotline" : 2231 3187 or purchase it directly through their website  or simply walk into one of their map-sale-outlets and see if they have it there:

  1. District Survey Office, Hong Kong,  18/F, Southorn Centre, 130-150 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong Island
  2. District Survey Office, Islands, 18/F Harbour Building, 38 Pier Road, Central, Hong Kong Island.
  3. The Postshop at the General Post Office, G/F, 2 Connaught Place,
    Hong Kong Island.
  4. Map Publications Centre, Kowloon: 382 Nathan Road, Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon
  5. Kowloon Central Post Office: 405 Nathan Road, Kowloon
  6. Tsim Sha Tsui Post Office:  G/F, Hermes House, 10 Middle Road, TST

Another option is to go to the website of the Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) : http://www.ofta.gov.hk/en/ca_bd/country_map/index.html or http://www.ofta.gov.hk/en/ca_bd/country_map/main.html and to download/print the attached maps.

.

In order to provide hikers with a general picture about the mobile network coverage in country parks (particularly along popular hiking and country trails), the Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) has published a series of digital maps (PDF / JPEG) which you can download free from their website.

The maps are not really that good but they can "do the job..." (after all... you are not planning to navigate through the rainforests of the Amazons...).

There is, of course, the option of joining one of the reputable tour operators who organizes adventure walking tours of Hong Kong's parks and nature reserves (believe it or not... they do exist and they are quite good too...), especially if you don't have enough time or if you don't want to challenge your navigation skills...
